The Edinburgh Studio took both staff and the young performers on an emotional journey together. Based on the Aberfan disaster that occurred in 1966, the piece documented the tragic tale of one small mining village in Wales ripped apart by an unimaginable catastrophe. A mountain of slurry waste that had loomed over the village slid down onto the town itself burying a primary school and killing over one hundred young people.

Portraying this horrific event in history was a real challenge. To show it the respect it deserved and do credit to the town of Aberfan whilst also guiding the young people through a harrowing emotional journey of trying to relive and recreate the actual disaster was a testing experience: it is a credit to the young people that they handled the task with maturity and sensitivity throughout.

Through the whole experience, they learned something not only about this tragic event in time but also about themselves and each other.
