As part of the Creative Youth Partnerships, schools and youth groups can enjoy a day with Youth Music Theatre: UK in February 2007. YMT: UK will be running two workshops in Northern Ireland exploring Shakespeare and musical theatre. For more details about the one-day workshops, keep reading...
Workshop One - Romeo and Juliet
How does Shakespeare transfer to the stage as a musical? Taking the play and comparing it with the Bernstein / Sondheim musical, West Side Story, students will work on characterisation and physicality, verbal and non verbal communication, rhythm, sound and vocal effects.
This workshop will help them to understand the roles of the verbal and the visual in theatre, and lead to a greater understanding of both the musical and the original Shakespearean play.
Workshop Two – Macbeth
Director and composer take students through the process of assessing the materials and the characters, choosing a section to work on and building a new musical theatre scene from one of Shakespeare’s most powerful tragedies. Where do you want to set it, in the 11th century or 21st century Ireland ? How does the text translate to modern idiom and what does the process tell us about the original? Be the first to perform this work.
