case studies   YOUTH MUSIC THEATRE UK

YMT: UK and NASUWT have formed a partnership to support young people’s musical theatre activities in Scotland. The support of YMT: UK’s work will benefit NASUWT by increasing their level of involvement and engagement as well as developing their profile within schools and the creative industries sector in Scotland.

The NASUWT sponsorship will support an educational web-based resource for teachers based on Missing Mel - a new piece of music theatre originally devised by young people and professional staff in 2004 to highlight issues  concerning young people. The NASUWT/Missing Mel website and teachers centre will be developed by an educational consultant in line with the Scottish Qualifications Authority curriculum and will be piloted in Scottish schools. The resource will include downloadable clips from the production of Missing Mel, lesson plans, workshop plans, scene script and excerpts from the musical score.

NASUWT has also generously supported a range of our other work, including Frankenstein in London.

SonyBMG joined the Corporate Membership Scheme in 2006.

SonyBMG is one of the world’s top music labels. Paul Bursche, Director of Communications, said ‘SonyBMG is committed to the creative development of young people in music and we are happy to be associated with an organisation that promotes young people being involved in devising and creating new musical theatre’. SonyBMG has also kindly donated tickets to the YMT: UK annual fundraising event Let it Snow in London which was instrumental in raising money for our Hardship Fund for young participants

Thanks to the support of SonyBMG, our production of Frankenstein in Plymouth was fully developed and staged off-West End in London for a week at the Cochrane Theatre in March 2008, to great critical acclaim.
