Soon after the final auditions, the team will work out who should be cast in each production. This can be a tricky task, and always takes a while. But we’ll get back to you as soon as we possibly can.
If, sadly, we weren’t able to offer you a place, you should consider joining our Summer Skills course – our non-auditioned workshop course that takes place around the UK. It’s a great chance to work with professional artistic staff and build your skills. (If you have done The Studio in the past, Summer Skills is the same course rebranded and slightly changed in format)
If we do offer you a place – congratulations! We’ll send you an offer pack full of information about your production, the rehearsal commitment, and the cost of taking part in the course. Around 25-35 other people will have been offered places on each project – most of whom won’t know anybody else involved – so you won’t be on your own! Many members tell us that they make friends for life on their projects. Each cast also has a team of trained pastoral staff to look after you while you’re taking part.
We have to charge a course fee to take part. This fee will include your accommodation for two weeks, all your food, tuition, pastoral care, a YMT company t-shirt and a DVD of your finished performance.
The course fee will be explained on your offer letter - it may seem like a lot of money to raise, so we provide you with a specially-written fundraising guide, too. Many of our members raise some of their own course fee by following the ideas in the guide and the advice of previous company members. We also find that many schools and some local authorities make contributions; as well as local trusts, foundations, charities and businesses. We have lots of fundraising knowledge to help you find support in your area. The course fee is also payable in four installments.
If you or your family find it particularly difficult to raise funds, we also run a ‘Buddy Scheme’ which pairs one of our volunteers or fundraisers with your family to help you raise the money locally. We also have a Hardship Fund to help out families who may find it otherwise impossible to take part. Whatever happens, don’t panic about the fee. Take up your place, and then work closely with us to help raise the funds – we’re here to help.
About a month before the start of your project, you’ll receive another pack with detailed timetables, a list of things to bring, and a ‘hello’ letter from your director and other artistic staff. There will also be emergency contact details to leave at home. By this time the excitement is really growing – you may even be able to chat to some of your future cast-mates on our online discussion forum!
It really is an incredible experience, and many of our members come back year on year.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How long will it take for you to make the decisions? A: We have to write to a huge number of people individually to explain their offer. This usually takes us around 2-3 weeks to prepare and mail out. We are working as quickly as possible to send out the offer packs and letters as soon as we can.
Q: Can you tell me my results by phone? A: In the interests of fairness, we cannot tell you any results by phone until we have posted out everybody's letter and allowed some time for the letters to reach them. We will keep this page of the website up to date and let you know when the letters have been mailed.
Q: My friends have heard if they were successful, why haven't I? A: Because of the large number of people who auditioned and the complexity of the projects, we have to send the letters out in stages. This means that some people may hear slightly before others. But don't panic! Just because a friend has been offered a place, it doesn't necessarily mean you won't... we know it's a bit nerve-wracking, but please be patient and wait for your letter to arrive.
Q: I need to book a holiday, so can you tell me the dates I should keep free in case I have a place on a YMT course? A: The productions take place at different times throughout August - your offer letter will explain the exact dates. Unfortunately we can't give you a clearer idea of the dates to keep free until you have received this letter.
Q: If I get offered a place on a project but the dates clash with another commitment, can I change to a different project? A: You can request to change to another project, but you won't be guaranteed a place - you will have been cast on to your project for a specific reason (for example, because your skills match the piece very well). If you ask to move to another project, you will be added to a reserve list for that project. If someone then drops out, we will consider if you would be suitable to take that place.
Q: What happens if I don't get a place? A: We're sorry if you don't get a place. Some people are added to reserve lists in case people drop out - if this happens, we'll let you know. Otherwise, you'll be invited to take part in Summer Skills 2010.
Q: I really want to take part in Summer Skillsif I don't get a place - but I don't want to book it in case I am offered one! What should I do? A: Don't worry - if you book a place on Summer Skills and then are offered a place on a project, you can transfer your deposit over so you won't lose anything. Our advice would be to book Summer Skills now to ensure your chosen location doesn't fill up, then you can transfer your place over to a project if you are offered a place.
