In 2005, under massive global pressure, the G8 group of industrial nations agreed to provide an extra $50 billion for Africa, but two years on, what has happened? Has the support been delivered; and if so has it helped the right people?

These questions will be at the heart of Studio Aberdeen and we’ll tap into the growing awareness of global poverty.

Whilst Britain held the presidency of the G8, and under the Blair/Brown leadership, poverty in Africa was high on the agenda. The other countries in the group, however, failed to commit to any significant packages of support for the continent, a move which triggered a huge international response.

The Make Poverty History campaign was a massive public call for aid for Africa. Alongside it, Bob Geldof staged Live-8, the long awaited follow-up to his original Live Aid event: it was an attempt to raise awareness about the problems faced in Africa. Did it work? Were the promises kept?

For Studio Aberdeen we’ll create an exciting new piece in the style of popular African culture, with gritty drama, pulsing music and energetic dance all combining to get the message across.

Now it’s 2007 and has Poverty been Made History or was it just a catchy sound bite for a season?
